a take on immigration policy reform

2009 April 2

Keeping with my Save the World theme of bitching, it really wouldn’t be complete until I addressed every issue, now would it! After long, deep consideration, which in actuality was a three and half second epiphany that hit me somewhere between 2 am pizza and 5 am coffee, I have come up with a rant addressing the issue of immigration. I have been told this semester by degree holding person’s of tenure, that immigration is a prevalent issue which apparently must be addressed, least considered in some manner else they wouldn’t be pushing the statistics about things which I wish I didn’t understand into my absorbent little mind. Immigration. Yeah, well, here we go. I can almost rant on command…  It’s a random and useless gift I think, but I do like to run my mouth, and perhaps such word vomit is valuable to some poor bystander.

Let me begin by saying that I have lost a considerable amount of energy and excitement about the plan from the moment at which it first occurred to me… that was several hours ago, and I was unequipped for an epiphany and had no pen with which to scribble the pertinent details of the idea, no sharp tool to etch the main points into the brick wall near by… and ultimately no freakin’ desire to take the seven steps to the room were any number of record keeping devices were located… therefore, some good bunch of cynicism is lost to my laziness in the wee hours of the morning. Damn, can’t rely on college students for shit, can ya’.

Here we are, a nation in economic turmoil, domestic unrest, and all keeping an uneasy and optimistic outlook towards the future… budgets cuts, unemployment, defaults, foreclosures… bailout after bailout after stimulus after what the fuck, c’mon, really? I now live in Arizona, which is not unaffected by the economic slowing, Mexican immigrants are being arrested, incarcerated, charged with a criminal offense, held without bond until hearings in District Courts that have caseloads that can easily bury a docket in misdemeanor immigration charges. The money needed to fund the courts, whose immigration cases increased by a whopping fuckin’ 154% in the past couple years is staggering… staggering to a state budget which has been taking massive, billion dollar cuts from programs and institutions that should, and hopefully would have the top billing for funding, if it weren’t for this pesky economy! Not to mention the funding, which beats the hell outta me where it’s appearing from, to increase border patrol agents, immigration officials and where the fuck are we going with this people!? Immigration is obviously still occurring; huge numbers of freakin’ Mexican Immigrants, legal, illegal, documented, undocumented, planning to be a variation of any of the previously mentioned statuses or even some that I am sure I haven’t mentioned are still cascading across the border to join the fuckin’ labor market! GASP! What is this! Persons wishing to assist in the labor force that drives the economy?! Give ‘em a fuckin number and put ‘em on the payroll boys! Collect some taxes on that shit and maybe taxes wouldn’t have to be spent on this game of round up that isn’t working. 385, OOO immigrants were arrested in the southwest; I am assuming a pretty decent fucking chunk of that number has come from Arizona, since it’s their mission here to gather the illegal immigrants. All of those arrests had to go to court, and the one’s that were arrested in AZ had to be charged with a criminal offense, held for court… blah blah blah… less that ONE HALF OF ONE PERCENT OF ALL THOSE ARRESTS WERE PROSECUTED. Wow, that’s an effective process we’ve got in operation there I think!

It’s been shown (in studies that have been giving me a headache all week while reading!) that the vamping up Border Defense does little to effect the desire of Mexican’s to enter the country illegally. Pay attention, dammit, there will be a test on that later!

I will tell you, because that’s what I do in case you haven’t noticed, what the fuck I think… oh boy, lucky you.

Mexico, a country whose residents leave in troves of upwards of 5OO,OOO a year to enter the US,
