Jones, the Quran & Ground Zero
Let’s take a minute and consider the fact that the reasonable notion of religious freedom to put a place of worship where ever you want is, well, unreasonable (for the sake of argument) and let’s also say the the threat by Pastor Jones to burn the Quran in protest of putting a Mosque near ground zero is just that a threat. To make a point, and believe me its apparently been made, that there is a disagreement over the building. Let’s put a university, or a museum or a strip mall for heavens sake! How about a solar panel or a playground with a big ass ferris wheel, or a memorial? See, I am considering that the rights of the people which we stand for would allow for such a thing to happen (placement of the Mosque) not without disagreement of course – but to go so far as to completely destroy any type of cooperation between two groups of people is, well, pretty far over the line. So since the lines have been crossed. No one can tell Iman to move the Mosque, its against the constitutional rights we like so much… and no one can tell Jones to cancel his bbq. The reasons that both are bad ideas are as follows: burning the Quran is an angry action to make a point – considerably parallel to burning a building to make a point. Plainly uncool. Building a religious center near a place which can mostly be a historical iconic site that American’s will often remember in conjunction with our freedoms and rights as American’s, perhaps detracts from the meaning of the site itself. Now, i had mentioned before that those rights and freedoms dictate that the Mosque can be built there, however, I personally think that a university is damn good idea.
I think these two guys should talk – Jones needs to tell Iman that it’s not a personal or religious disagreement, and acknowledge his right to build it, but tell him it’s not the best idea… shit if the two dudes hash it out they could end up building something together more important to the American people than the fight that has ensued from the original plan.
